Roslyn; Microsoft’s Compiler as a Service

The Buzz:

Until not so long ago Visual Studio and the different language compilers weren’t really accessible or extendable from outside of the Visual Studio Product team. You enter some code in Visual Studio, Refactor and Compile and out come the binaries. Microsoft is working to change the architecture of both the compilers of VB.NET and C# and of the Visual Studio IDE to allow us to extend both the compilers and the IDE. This is all done as part of project Roslyn. It is expected that Roslyn will be the new basis for IntelliSense, Refactoring, Code Generation, StyleCop and maybe even FxCop. During the presentation we will look at what Roslyn allows us developers to do at the 3 levels, the compiler level, the source level and the editor level and we will look at the concept of compiler as a service.

The Person:
Jesse Houwing is a Senior Consultant working for Avanade Netherlands, living in Utrecht and working primarily from Almere. He’s specialized in developer productivity and appliation lifecyle management and comes from a .NET custom development background. In his spare time he tries to solve other peoples FxCop, LINQ and Regular expression issues which serve as a replacement for Sudoku’s and Cyptograms and Roslyn seems to be a logical new area of interest. He loves a good cup of coffee in the morning and is an avid amateur photographer. Last year he received the Microsoft Community Contributor Award for his support in the MSDN forums and on StackOverflow.com. He occasionally shares his ideas on his blog: http://blog.jessehouwing.nl/
